Faith in Focus: How to Add Value

(Psalm 1:1-3)

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

I have a confession to make. I’m sick of purported “value” peddlers. It only takes fifteen minutes in the online marketing space to get bombarded from every direction about “value”. In my opinion, it is the most overused and under-delivered promise in the online marketing space. All of the marketing gurus and wanna be experts tout how they focus on adding value to their tribes. This value-laden rhetoric sounds great and would in fact be wonderful IF in fact it actually made a tangible difference in the lives of real people like you and me.

Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.

(Joshua 3:12-13)

Faith in Focus: Salt and Light

(Matthew 5:13-16)
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

10 Practical Tips for dealing with difficult people

  1. Don’t be self-righteous (“There is no one righteous, no not one”, Roman 3:10)
  2. Stop trying to control others
  3. Use Discretion in Confrontations (“The discretion of a man delays his anger; and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.”,  Proverbs 19:11)
  4. Learn to listen better
  5. Resign from the bench (“Judge not, that you be not judged”,  Matt 7:1)
  6. Forgive
  7. Refuse to retaliate as you prioritize your faith over your feelings (“All things work together for the good“, Romans 8:28)
  8. Refuse to play their game
  9. Maintain humility by esteeming others rather than yourself (“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.“, Philippians 2:3-4)
  10. Stay prayerful (“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven.“, Matthew 5:44)
