Defining Spiritual Attention Deficit Disorder:
  • Difficulty with sustained concentration/focus on the spiritual dimensions of one’s being:
Six symptoms of Spiritual ADHD spectrum are most evident:
  • Superficial grasp of God’s nature
  • Lack of self-mastery
  • Satisfaction with the carnality of consumption
  • Difficulty remaining committed to transcendent values
  • Shallow relationships — quid pro quo friends
  • Self-serving and judgmental attitudes
Defining Spiritual Hyperactivity:
  • Extreme busyness in pursuit of desired spiritual achievements at the expense of spiritual attunement (harmony).
The solution to Spiritual ADHD is captured in a single word, “Presence”. I would like to propose a system for full consideration of presence in each of our lives. I call it “The Presence Principle”.
“The spiritual life is not a life before, after, or beyond our everyday existence. No,the spiritual life can only be real when it is lived in the midst of the pains and joys of the here and now.” -Henri Nouwen
Defining the Presence Principle:
  • Your human growth and potential is a function of your pursuit of complete fulfillment in the present, without worry for the past or the future—both of which are completely out of your control.
For the Christian, the Presence Principle requires us to consider three interrelated questions about God, our neighbor, and ourselves:
  1. How well have I mastered remaining centered in God’s presence?
  2. How centered am I in staying present with meaningful relationships in my life?
  3. How centered am I in staying present in my own needs and desires?
The simple but profound approach to embodying The Presence Principle is to remain committed to three behaviors:
  • Pay Attention: How focused am I on/in your presence?
  • Embrace Wonder (Be curious): How curious and admiring am I of your presence?
  • Give Encouragement: How do I uplift you in the present?
